#102 - Underwear

Underwear? You ask. It's true. This is one of those little odd reasons I hate being fat... underwear. As a fat woman I find myself faced with the dilemma of which underwear style to choose. I'm still quite heavy and have this oh-so-attractive stomach roll that I can't figure out what to do with. Here's the thing... do I wear big huge granny panties to cover it up? Do I wear high cut bikinis that cover half of it? Do I choose normal bikinis and let my undies sit under my roll. Or do I go nuts and wear a thong just covering up the bits? It's a strange dilemma, but I'm faced with it. The only reason this came up was the fact that I got so lazy and didn't wash clothes for a long time and have now gotten the chance to take a tour of every single pair of underwear in my underwear drawer. Yup I've worn them all. Briefs, bikinis, boy shorts, lace ones, cotton ones, silky ones, my underwear drawer is a cornucopia of undergarments.

So here's my take so far of Undie Tour 2009. The high cut bikinis are a pain. They cover half my roll when I slip them on, but during the day gravity and movement manage to roll them down and they end up bunched in a little roll under my, well, roll. Not very comfortable I must say. Same thing with the boy shorts. They are super cute when I slide them on, but in the end are hidden under my tummy. The regular bikini was at least honest with me. It made no attempt to cover up the stomach and sat below my gut. They are comfortable, but something about my tum tum swaying loose in the wind bothers me. I don't like the feel of my stomach scratching against the inside of my jeans. I don't know, maybe it's just me. Then there was the string bikini. God help us. This one was terrible. Not only did they disappear under my roll, the strings on the side found themselves wedged into my hip. Geesh, didn't I realize before I actually had hip rolls? Gross out. So when I look in the mirror, all I see is a little triangle of fabric covering my hoo ha, the rest mysteriously missing, tucked away in the folds. This, I did not like. Finally there was the infamous granny panties. OK I think what I call granny panties isn't the same ones your granny wears. Honestly I don't think I've ever bought a pair of truly full cut brief underwear. The ones I wear are actually labeled hipsters, whatever that means. But like Goldie Locks said, "they were just right". These seem to hug my body in all the right ways, cover the stomach, and stay put all day long. In my mind these are granny panties, but I know they are not even close. Granny panties are the ones that go up to your belly button... Let's not go there. So the clear winner for me was the hipsters.

But what about the size? Ugh, don't get me started. When did someone come up with underwear sizing? 4,6,8,10? And those sizes pretty much cover the size range of most women? I've always hovered in the 8-10 range for most of my adult life. Size 10? What is that equivalent to? I wear a size 22? I like what some of the plus-sized stores do. They actually size underwear normally. I can go there, buy a size 22/24 and KNOW they will fit. How many times have you picked up a 3-pack of undies in size X from one brand and another pack in the same size from another brand, go them home, and neither fit right (one probably being to tight, one too big)? I'll stick with my plus-sized brands even though they are heinously expensive ($14 for a pair of undies?!?).

This makes me think of the sizing on pantyhose (ok pantyhose aren't underwear, so a bit off topic, but at least it has the word panty in it!). A,B,C... Q? I was surprised to find I had picked up a royal title just from wearing my Queen-sized pantyhose! What the hell is that about? Is that the company's way of saying, "Aww, I'm sorry you're so fat. Let me make you feel better and call your size Queen." Strange. Some of the plus-size stores at least have the dignity to call it like it is and just continue the alphabet with their sizes, D,E,F,G,H. While some others have opted to come up with up with their own naming convention, either restarting the alphabet, A,B,C, or using numbers 1,2,3. I personally like the ones that give me the real sizes like 1X, 2X, 3X. Then I really know what I'm getting. I mean, am I a B or a C or a 2 or a 3? Well at least I know I'm somewhere around 2X or 3X, so I appreciate the honesty in their sizing. But I suppose pantyhose don't really need exact sizes anyway. When a pair of pantyhose says it fits a woman from 5'4" to 6'3" from 190 pounds to 250 pounds, I think you can be loose with the sizing.

So now all that remains in my undie drawer is a thong. So the question is... am I going thong or doing laundry today? I suppose I could take a tip from my boyfriend and just go commando!

I am so with you on this one. You expressed EXACTLY HOW I FEEL but written out in words lol. Underwear can be the biggest pain in the ass & this is so true.

Yes, yes, yes! I have the same problem with underwear - especially bikini cut ones. I've decided just to deal with the regular ol' briefs because I just can't take it when my undies roll off my belly and bunch up underneath.
Great post!

I wear the high-cut briefs from Lane Bryant (store not catalog). They may be the same as what you call "hipsters" but they work the best with the fat rolls.

I pretty much wear granny panties all the time. They're ugly... but at least they're comfortable. lol

But... I can't wait until I'm thin enough to wear pretty panties!

I love the hipsters from Lane Bryant the ones with the colored banding on the leg opening and the top so they look a little like men's undies. The thing is that the whole thing is made out of super soft cotton so it's super comfy.

Are you a mind reader! I had the exact same dilemma this morning. Very funny but oh so true post.

I don't think I'll ever wear sexy panties other than when hubby wants me to model them lol. I'm a granny panties girl all the way. I must admit my granny panties have come a long way from the old fashion cotton bloomers I use to wear to the silky briefs I wear now but they are still the same that they cover a lot of area lol. But I like what I like. I sure don't want something rolling down my belly or up my ars lol.

Great post, it got me laughing especially the hoo ha and queen comments lol.

I have absolutely the same problem and I am average size. The thing is, I am also a regular gal that does not have the perfect athletic body those models that advertise undies have (y'know everything fits perfectly, nothing rolls or folds etc.), nor do I care to have one, really, but it gets soooo annoying when you shop for lingerie. I also decided that hipsters are the best, and I also wear them a bit bigger (not to the point of sliding down:), so that nothing "extra" is visible under my clothes. Even though you call them granny panties, they can be found in really nice patterns and fabrics, to take away nothing from their sexiness:)
I am so glad to see you back, I am a HUGE fan. Keep up the good work!

My solution: Hanes Her Way Hi-Cut Briefs. Perfect combo of "stay above the tummy" and "not look (too much) like granny panties". :o)

i wear big dresses most of the time and i never wear underwear. i just put on a slip or something as an undergarment and go free- it feels great. under jeans i wear bikers shorts because they tend to be too rough to go commando...

You have to know your hip (and sometimes waist) measurements to shop for panties. Never made any sense to me either, but it's easier for manufacturers to make a handful of sizes (usually 4-10) than to make them in 0-24 (where the vast majority of American women fall). So I would guess that's why they do it. It'd be nice if the underpants sizes corresponded to pants sizes though!

Whenever I shopped for underwear in the UK I found that they were sized the same as pants were. Wear an 18? Buy an 18. I kind of miss buying my underpants at Marks & Spencer. I do still have some but none of them fit. :-((((

As for which type to buy...buy what is comfortable! Try hipsters, I really like those and still wear them even though I'm almost at my goal weight. They're just the right cut to fit comfortably and not show when I sit or lean forward.

You are so funny! What a great writer. I can so identify with this personal issue. I used to weigh 150 pounds more than I do now, and underwear was one of my big pet peeves, along with pantyhose and "shaping garmets." What were they supposed to shape? Anyway, great blog. I also chronicle my weight loss journey and it is very theraputic. Diane

i've never understood sizes in general. i'm a small girl - short, small boned, currently weigh the most i ever have and that's not a very high number. and i have the belly roll too. i'm not trying to be all like, "oh i'm so fat," but i feel like the ads and the mannequins and everything give us the idea that This is How We Should Look in underwear. and i think very few people do. so we all think we look wrong, and the fact is, we actually look normal. like, let's address the fact that every woman more than five years past puberty who isn't an athlete has pudge around her belly button. it's a fact. even "skinny" girls. so let's stop this crap, because too many beautiful ladies think they're ugly.

Anonymous said...

trust me babe - i am the same weight as you and have a whole heap of "junk in my trunk" the holeproof cool undies are sooooooo comfy and I fit very comfortably into an 18 because they stretch so well - so they will last you through your shrinkage!!

I dont like penties, and i can't wear boycut style. I am a pear shape, for me the best is thong. I love them :)

Beside the sizing in itself i found that each company has its own sizing which can be really hard to follow.

But losing 25 pounds helped me a lot to feel better in my undies.

I really enjoy your blog. I am a fat chick and I recently wrote a book called Making Light of Beavy Heavy. It is basically my observations have been fat my whole life but with a humorous spin to it. During the month of May I have been promoting my book with a virtual book tour. The coordinators had me send my book out to different "reviewers" to review on their blogs and it sure has been interesting to see their take on Making Light of Being Heavy. This is a link to one of the reviewers that actually did get my point - http://asthepagesturn.wordpress.com/2009/05/15/making-light-of-being-heavy-by-kandy-siahaya/
I also have a website www.makinglightofbeingheavy.com I work alot of hours with my main job which is medical transcription so I have been finding it difficult to do a lot of blogging. If you get a chance would you take a minute to look at my blog? There are a few more links to interviews, etc. regarding my book and maybe consider having my link on your site also. Keep up your blogging!! I enjoy it.

The sizing is crazy! I wear size 22 pants & size 10 panties? Well then, why the heck can't they size pants that way so I can wear size 10 pants & be done with all this? lol

I love boy shorts for this very exact reason! They give full coverage yet at the same time you don't have to feel like you are wearing granny panties!

The truth is though, that while 75% of my undies are boy shorts, the other 25% are granny panties and I don't care who knows it! I'm pretty sure that I am much sexier when I feel better about myself and there is no way that my fat tummy rolling over my panties makes me feel good at all!

Hi,
I read a few blogs ago that you are stuck and can't lose those last few pounds. I don't if if anyone has pointed this out to you or if I am being actually helpful but everyone when engaged in weight loss will hit a plateau. As it suggests 'hitting a plateau' means you are plateauing and your body won't budge. So you just need to stuck to it and challenge your body with more exercise. Belly dancing is great, it tones and is nicer to us larger ladies. Don't forget to drink loads of water. Good luck! (Hopefully you'll be able to get a new blog with a title like '101 reasons I love my body.'

Hi there, from what I've read and seen around me(including myself)some people are genetically engineered,at various levels, to get fat. These days I'm reading a book called Burn the Fat, Feed the muscle and it covers every angle, every problem anyone can face when trying to lose fat,not weight(the nuance is important). It explains that the only way to lose fat permanently consists in a clean diet(with occasional splurges)of 5-6 small meals, some form of cardio AND resistance(weights) training, and a gradual fatloss (no more than 1-1.5 pound of fat a week).

Laughed my ass off reading this post because it's so true. I don't get Lane Bryants sizing with the underwear b/c I wear a size 18 (or a 3, pbbbt) in the jeans but the 14/16 underwear is all loose and floopy (and thankfully I got them on sale 5 for $25) I don't think it needs to be so difficult.

Also, I was wondering how you get readers? I have just started bogging about my desire to be an ex-fatty, and it would be nice to get the occasional comment (even if it is an insult in intrnetz spk which I can then stomp all over with such oddities as logic and complete sentences).

I'm stuck in the middle and I hate it! I'm too fat for mainstream sizes and I'm too thin for big girls sizes so I just can't get ANYTHING that's not either too big or too small. I seem to be right bang smack in between a ladies 16 and 18. At 18 they start plus sizes here whereas the 16's are part of the regular sizes. If I put on a 16 it fits but it's too tight and doesnt flatter me but if I buy an 18 there is a huge jump in size and suddenly I'm drowning in my clothing! I need to either lose weight and be thin and sexy or gain some and be curvalicious and proud! LOL

I have been wearing hipsters for years...not only do I have weight issues but I had a C-section a while back, so I have a definite little (or not so little :P) ledge across my belly. I can't stand it when panties dig underneath it all day! I feel like hipsters offer a bit of tummy control as well, if they are a nice firm stretch material rather than just cotton. I have basically decided that the right fitting underwear is an absolute MUST for having a good day, lol.

Yes, this mess with different brands' sizes is very fatiguing. Perhaps there is a possibility in some stores to try on underwear before buying it

God, I can SO TOTALLY identify with everything you wrote. I have an extra problem (besides massive fatness) in that I am also short. The frustration you feel about buying underwear I feel about buying clothing in general. Clothing manufacturers have apparently decided that you can be tall and fat or short and thin, but you can't be short and fat.

Antonia said...

Totally true and you always have issues with them rolling because they are to small or the underwear looks dumpy and gross making it nearly impossible to match them or to do that it is expensive.

Hello. I don't know why you don't like exercise. I haven't been reading long. But, if it's because you feel tired or not energetic during the day, you might want to get tested for sleep apnea. I just got diagnosed with a similar condition called sleep hypopnea. Basically your airway is partially blocked at night, so you don't get enough oxygen. Anyway, it makes it difficult to lose weight because you don't want to exercise because you're tired all the time, and it changes your brain chemistry so you store more fat. I don't know why, that's just what the doc said. He said that it's not uncommon, that once it's treated, that people lose weight because they're more energetic and their brain goes out of conserve mode. Hope that this helps someone. I haven't been treated yet, so I can't personally vouch for this. Just repeating what my doc said.

OK, this is truly disgusting. But, I am thinking of coming up with a product for fat girls. Tell me if you think there is a market for it...

Underpants that are cut to go under the "roll" or "apron" that are extra absorbent at the top. My problem is that I sweat where my skin touches skin. And regular underpants have the pretty non-absorbent band around the top, so it just aggravates the problem. My idea is to sew a very soft absorbent material to cover the band and another two inches or so. That way, the undies can separate the skin and absorb any moisture. Keeps from getting a rash.

What do you think?

Well, I guess I will just jump into this discussion and be honest by saying that I am a man that decided nearly 13 years ago after a suggestion from my wife to wear panties full time. I do not ever regret making that choice because I do enjoy the soft silky nylon or satin panties and the choices in colors and styles, and the great fit, but I can relate to everything you said in your story. I also have a vast array of choices in styles in my underwear drawer ( non of them include boxers, tighy whities, or boxer briefs or anything that you would normally see in a guy's drawer) for the exception of thong panties which I personally do not care for. I find myself also gravitating more to the hi-cut hipster briefs or the full (granny) brief because of the roll down issue, I wear size 8-9 and I personally like the Vassarette Shaping panties that are sold at Walmart because they tend to hold the belly in a bit and they too come in pretty colors, Vanity Fair sells the same. I am trying to lose my belly but it is tough especially as you get older, but I am still in the fight. Thanks for your post and I hope people don't think I am some freak posting here I am just a honest man that can very plainly relate to all of this and was looking for solutions when I found the post. Okay, this may surprise or gross out some but it almost sounded like you were in my underwear drawer. I am a guy with tiny bits and I have worn only nylon or satin panties for the past 14 years at the suggestion of my wife, and believe me when I say I would never want to go back to any style of men's underwear especially tighty whities. I can relate to every issue you spoke about as I have a bit of a pooch and I too hate my panties rolling down under my belly too, I have several pair of Vanity Fair Perfectly Yours Ravissant Brief panties and opt for those quite often. However I do have some of the Illumination double string bikini panties that tend to fit good sometimes. I do have the hipsters and the hi-cuts as well as boy shorts and cheeky's oh and I only have one Thong which I am not a huge fan of (I suppose that is why I have only one pair) lol..... I also find that the hipsters tend to fit decent. I also wear Compression Pantyhose and lace top thigh highs so I can also relate to those issues as well.... I found it funny when you were talking about the sizing on pantyhose and I have had some of those that rolled down also, I think I most usually end up in the F or Q-plus size. I am like one I saw posted here I will be glad when I loose a few pounds So that these problems go away. Now are we having pizza for dinner!
